Shenanigans?

A place where I can ramble about this and that without flooding the rest of the boards.

For those who don't know this has been an annoying week. I received a relatively condescending email this weekend from a game publisher who shall remain nameless (but one who has nothing to do with the Old School Revival) telling me how folks like me were "ruining the industry" -- and driving down his company's precious profits -- by giving away "good games like Microlite74" for free. Needless to say, this has put me off of doing much posting roleplaying wise this week and made me even more likely to give more stuff away for free in the future.

If I ever received such an email, I'd be honored. You know you're doing something right at that point.

Bullies thrive on anonymity. I'd encourage anyone bothered by these trolls to be open about who the perpetrators are so they can get their just comeuppance. :)

I've heard from him recently and he says he's come out better and stronger. Thank goodness.

BUT...

I'd like to hear the story from the horse's mouth out of a more serious reason - having been involved in the wars over OSRIC, I want to know who's doing what as a matter of routine reconnaissance. The pieces are still being placed on the board in terms of reaching beyond into the mainstream. Dan and I are both making plans, and so are others like Kenzer, Goodman (see the BB deal with grodog and Tacojohn), and others. These plans aren't being coordinated (which I suppose is competition, in a sense), so it's important to know if someone is strong-arming. Especially if it's one of the peripheral (ie not traditional OSR) players like Goodman, Kenzer, etc.

I can't speak for Goodman Games officially (and I never have spoken for Goodman Games officially), nor can I speak for Kenzer or anyone else mentioned above other than Black Blade. But I can assure all of the Gentle Readers here that Black Blade isn't strong-arming anyone (except perhaps my layout guy, who's working on our upcoming release ;) ).

This whole thing does sort of remind me of the not-so-quiet campaign that was waged in the 'back alleys' and on the 'grape vine' as OSRIC progressed toward it's first release.

correct on identities there.
this is kinda creepy. i wasn't on the net while OSRIC bubbled up from the pits.
i'm not sure that pressure from 'The Big Boys' is really the issue (and I'm not
even an amateur sleuth so maybe I'm wrong) - seems more like it's pressure
from dealing with a-holes and such within the 'community'.
but what do I know? i'm peanut gallery.

I admit it. It's me. I'm sending annoying e-mails laced with veiled implications of milk toast repercussions if my requests are not considered. I've targeted all of the OSR publishers, and the wannabe OSR publishers. My belief is that anyone so thin-skinned as to publicly whine about getting a private nasty gram doesn't deserve to be in any kind of business. At all.

Replace "spies" with "thin-skinned publishers". 8-)

Gamers have funny brains.

Whenever there's a gap in creativity, it tends to get filled with much-ado-about-nothing, aka "crap".
