You know, I'm dense -- I just now caught what you were getting at. You're right. I guess it it's an ironic epithet. 8-)

I've printed out some of Grim's hexmapping worksheets and got busy. That's the (empty-looking) players' map, above, and it shows the basic areas you've visited (5 miles per hex).

You're in the village of Deepeave, which is under the protection of Prefect Milos of Rushmarch. Lord Milos maintains his seat of rule at Rushmarch Manor, which stands atop the heights of Riverfork Ridge. (You met him when Wethimyr went there to petition for permission to build.) There are four other small villages within Rushmarch. Deepeave stands on the edge of a vast and wild forest known as Blackrush Deep, which stretches for miles to the south. The nearest major city is the City State of Thrax, which is about 45 miles to the west.

Boris' Journal - Third Fragment

Boris' Journal - 1

The mage is more reckless and dangerous than I suspected but our venture has finally turned a profit! We returned to the tor a week ago and mapped more of the first level. We did make several interesting discoveries and plans were made for specialized equipment to be procured upon our return to Deepeave, should we be so blessed as to live that long. Endeavoring to increase the limits of our map we chose to enter an area sealed by a massive portcullis. Inspection beyond that fateful point revealed a chamber with three doors. Alas, we did not take enough precautions for safety in that dark chamber and I was victim to a concealed trap there. My astute companions recognized that I was not slain and began efforts to rescue me from my postion at the bottom of the pit. It was then that a giant spider chose to attack. Zoki and Melbort fought valiantly against the menace but poor Melbort was bitten by the creature even as he landed a fatal strike against it. The poison was quick and we had no means to aid him. We retrieved our fallen companion and retreated forthwith to Deepeave to recover, replace supplies and recruit a replacement for the fallen Melbort. We spent several days in town accomplishing those takes and once they were completed our party had gained two promising new recruits. An adventuring swordsman joined our band as well as an eager young warrior recruited by my contact at the temple. We returned to the tor and reconnoitered more of the first level. Our inspection revealed some areas we had overlooked previously, among them a treasure that we could see but not reach. We searched anxiously for some time before we found a secreted space that led into an area adjoining the treasure. Wethimyr saved our skins with his magic, annihilating several of the guardians we battled there. I commandeered the warhammer of one of the foes and it proved a wise decision. I have begun favoring that weapon rather than my tired mace. Wethimyr believes there is an enchantment upon it and I believe him after the shocking magic I have now seen him perform.

First level magic user.
One spell.
Total points of damage delivered: 146. Plus falling damage.

(the spell was cast from a scroll, but Boris doesn't know that).
(73 points of damage delivered to each of 2 enemies, although one made his save and took only half damage).

That was the most impressive use of a "lightning bolt bounce" that I have ever seen. The circumstances were just about perfect, and you seized the moment. Well done! 8-)

It saddens me that Melbort died in the very moment of his triumph (i.e. he made an awesome bow-shot, hacked off the giant spider's leg, charged after it and killed it, was elevated from "normal man" to "Veteran Fighting Man"...and then succumbed to the poison the spider injected in its desperate, dying spasm. The fates deserted him at last.)

I'm also a bit sad that we soon may have to give up our cleric spell jokes:

"I'm taking charm person, what spell did you memorize...oh yeah, you can't..."
"No worries, you'll have Boris right behind you if you get hurt...oh, waitaminute..."
"Maybe Boris can invoke an augury...oh, maybe not..."
"It's just a flesh wound, have the cleric cast...oh..."

If Grim can avoid the swords of his comrades and any other looming pits, he might make it to 2nd level. :D

The other great moment is having your two man armored front line step up and roll two natural 20s. That combat was a meat-grinder in a good way, especially considering that I was down a hole filling backpacks with treasure, and all but one person up top (Stephen's character) started the combat being slept. Four rounds later, the bad guys aren't anything but a big mess and a bad smell, and I'm already back down the hole filling up backpacks again.
