Dark Dungeons

Discussion of other retro-clone rules

Dark Dungeons

Postby MilkManX » Tue Jul 06, 2010 6:35 pm

Anyone check out Dark Dungeons?

Its a retro clone of the 80's Basic/Rules Cyclopedia..

Anyway that is what I played alot as a kid.

Toys R Us did not sell AD&D for some reason and my Mom got me the Red and Later Blue sets.

My brother and I played them with our cousins. Around that time I would also play AD&D with my friends from school but I preferred my Mentzer sets.

Anyway I dig the clone. Art is not too bad but it is not Elmore...

DOH!

How about a link!

I've got a copy of this on order with Lulu.

Courious as much as anything as I did not ever play the RC rules. Of course, I still have my mint RC that I bought and dutifully stored away for 'some day'. Come to think of it, I've got mre RPG rules systems than you can shake a dead DM at!

I played lots of BECMI but, although I bought the RC, I never actually used it. It was, IMO, a book that was less than the sum of its parts. The books from the boxed sets were thin, well-laid out, and easy to tote around. The RC somehow managed to be unwieldy, poorly laid out, inconvenient for anything except monsters and treasures.

Say what you will about Mentzer's revision of the Basic book: it was easy to figure out how to create a character. Had I not already know, the RC would not have been much help.

That said, I hope Dark Dungeons proves to be the success its author hopes it to be.

I've heard that the sample character given in the book is our friend Black Leaf. ;)
